The Most Popular Automobiles of All Time

The development of automobiles was a result of several factors. In addition to a vast land area with scattered settlements, the United States had a higher per capita income and more equitable distribution of income than its European counterparts. Automobile prices were subsequently low, and a long tradition of American manufacturing encouraged mass production. In addition to cheap raw materials and a shortage of skilled labor, these factors contributed to mechanization of the industrial process.

Model T

The Model T was a highly successful automobile that changed the way people looked at the automobile industry. In 1927, Henry Ford announced that he would no longer manufacture the car and would instead produce the Model A. However, that change meant the company would have to scrap 40 thousand tools that were used to make Model Ts. Although the car’s design was quite similar to the current Model A, the car was still unique, and it stood out in a crowd of other cars.

Model N

The 1905 Ford Model N was a popular car, able to run at a respectable pace and win the first prize in the AACA’s National Automobile Championship in 1971. The Model N retailed for $500, making it cheaper than an Oldsmobile with a curved dashboard. The car listed twin side oil lamps and a horn, and a leather top cost an extra $50. A 10 gallon fuel tank allowed for a 200 mile range on rough roads.

Model S

While the Tesla Model S may be the most famous electric car on the planet, it also possesses a high degree of daily comfort. While the car’s handling is undoubtedly impressive, its smooth ride and low center of gravity make it a great choice for daily commutes. The Model S is comfortable, too, with adaptive air suspension, larger optional 21-inch wheels, and less cushy tire sidewalls. The Model S has tri-zone climate control, seat ventilation, and heaters.

The era when the Oldsmobile company produced cars is long gone, but its legacy lives on. During the early 1900s, the company was a success, and Samuel Latta Smith, a wealthy copper industry tycoon, became a majority shareholder. Smith installed two of his sons as top executives, but these two men clashed with founder Ransom Olds on a regular basis. He eventually left the company, and a new division was born: the Oldsmobile Corporation.

The production of a Toyota automobile is highly flexible. The supply chain is designed to reduce cost by focusing on simplicity. Toyota uses a Heijunka system of production scheduling, which reduces inventory and improves speed of delivery. Toyota also develops a Just-in-time production system, limiting the number of suppliers while achieving cost reduction. This system also enables Toyota to respond quickly to fluctuations in demand. The process is based on a number of innovative practices.
